{"id":11149,"date":"2011-11-11T04:11:38","date_gmt":"2011-11-11T04:11:38","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2011-11-10T17:11:54","modified_gmt":"2011-11-10T17:11:54","slug":"How-to-get-to-North-Korea-and-if-you-can-legally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asiancemagazine.com\/?p=11149","title":{"rendered":"How to get to North Korea and if you can legally"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Continuing writing about my <a href=\"http:\/\/joshuaspodek.com\/north-korea\">North Korea trip<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Mention you went to North Korea and you&#8217;ll hear two questions more than any others: How do you get there and is it legal?<\/p>\n<p>With proper paperwork Americans can legally tour North Korea, <a href=\"http:\/\/travel.state.gov\/travel\/cis_pa_tw\/cis\/cis_988.html\">according to the State Department<\/a>, but it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travel.state.gov\/travel\/cis_pa_tw\/tw\/tw_5137.html\">warns you you&#8217;re taking serious risks<\/a>, you just have no legal recourse from the U.S. government because the two countries have no diplomatic relations.<\/p>\n<p>How to get there, on the other hand, can be easy. I hear doing all the paperwork yourself is impossibly complex. On the other hand, letting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.koryogroup.com\/index.php\">Koryo Tours<\/a> handle the paperwork, as we did, makes everything easy. All you have to do is show up in Beijing with a double entry visa to China, pay for their services, and you&#8217;re set. They&#8217;ve been taking people there for twenty years, although Americans only recently.<\/p>\n<p>Seriously, they make it simple. Their fee covers all necessities &#8212; the flight from Beijing to Pyongyang, all hotel costs, and all food costs. We opted to buy Mass Games tickets and ate one meal at a special restaurant. Otherwise, you don&#8217;t have to bring any cash, though you&#8217;ll want to for souvenirs and to tip your category_ides.<\/p>\n<p>I recommend Koryo.
