{"id":12216,"date":"2012-02-05T17:02:39","date_gmt":"2012-02-05T17:02:39","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2012-02-05T17:02:27","modified_gmt":"2012-02-05T17:02:27","slug":"Strong-6-8-quake-hits-Philippines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asiancemagazine.com\/?p=12216","title":{"rendered":"Strong 6.8 quake hits Philippines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Ring of Fire strikes again!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A strong 6.8 earthquake hit the central Philippines on Monday but there was no danger of a widespread tsunami, seismologists said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The quake hit 70 kilometers (44 miles) north of the city of Dumaguete on Negros Island at 11:49am (0349 GMT) at a depth of 46 kilometers, the US Geological Survey said.<\/p>\n<p>The Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology measured it as 6.9 at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometres centred in the sea off the city of La Carlota.<\/p>\n<p>Philippine seismologists and local residents said there was panic, but no immediate reports of casualties or major damage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no danger of a widespread destructive tsunami.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Philippines sits on the Pacific &#8220;Ring of Fire&#8221; &#8211; a belt around the Pacific Ocean where friction between shifting tectonic plates causes frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Source AFP<\/em><br \/>\n<!--break--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ring of Fire strikes again!
