In 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed an extension making the week-long celebration into a month long recognition.<strong> In 1992, the month of May was officially designated as Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month by law.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Watch this brief video on Asian American history<\/strong><br \/>\n<iframe width=\"420\" height=\"315\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6hVlSuuaQhs\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n<strong>May was chosen because it commemorates the immigration of the first Japenese to the United States in 1843<\/strong>. May also marks the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 which was work performed by mostly Chinese immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>If you get a chance, try and visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mocanyc.org\">Museum of Chinese in America.<\/a> The museum presents the history, heritage, culture and diverse experiences of people of Chinese descent in the United States.
