If anyone is qualified to give advice on developing a thick skin, it\u2019s Wendi Deng Murdoch, 43, who harbors an ambition and busyness that would most likely exhaust even the most determined of Manhattan socialities. <\/p>\n

Her first film, \u201cSnow Flower and the Secret Fan,\u201d based on the best-selling book and produced with Florence Sloan, the Chinese wife of another media mogul, the former MGM studio chief Harry E. Sloan, came out in 2011.<\/strong> The pair are close to signing a deal with Sony Pictures to distribute their second movie based on the memoir \u201cJourney of a Thousand Miles,\u201d by the Chinese pianist Lang Lang.<\/p>\n

If there was a single moment that crystallized Mrs. Murdoch\u2019s ascendancy in the public imagination, it was during her husband\u2019s testimony last July before a British parliamentary subcommittee over the widespread phone hacking that happened at one of his newspapers, The News of the World. Wearing a pink blazer, she sat behind him, then instinctively vaulted out of her chair to protect her husband from a protester\u2019s pie attack.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

\u201cUntil the cream-pie incident, she\u2019d really been branded the classic younger wife with a tinge of racism and stereotyping,\u201d said Andrew Butcher, a former senior communications executive at News Corporation. \u201cThat turned everything around for her.\u201d <\/p>\n
