This is great and all, but is it really necessary to announce ‘lesbian’? Why should it matter? ahhhh. There’s an election coming up. Have to make sure you grab the LGBT community vote!<\/strong><\/p>\n

President Obama nominated a Brooklyn prosecutor to be the first gay, Asian-American woman on the federal bench.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pamela Ki Mai Chen, a seasoned civil rights prosecutor, was recommended for the post by Sen. Chuck Schumer.<\/p>\n

Chen is unlikely to go before the Senate for confirmation until after the presidential election .<\/p>\n

Schumer said in a statement that Chen is a \u201cfantastic\u201d nominee \u201cwho possesses the legal excellence, intellect and temperament to be a first-rate judge.\u201d<\/p>\n

The LGBT and human rights community cheered Chen\u2019s choice.<\/strong> She is the second Chinese-American woman nominated to a federal judgeship and the fifth openly gay attorney nominated to the federal bench by Obama, according to Washington Blade, a gay newspaper in D.C.<\/p>\n

Chen\u2019s boss, Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch, said Chen is \u201cquite simply, the complete package.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the Eastern District, Chen\u2019s most recent case targeted a Mexican ring, Los Granados, whose members pleaded guilty to trafficking in underage girls.<\/strong> Earlier, she prosecuted a Yemeni cleric who raised money for terrorists in Brooklyn mosques and a group of Staten Island teenagers who pleaded guilty to racially motivated attacks on the night Obama was elected.<\/p>\n

Chen grew up in Chicago, the daughter of Chinese immigrants.<\/strong><\/p>\n
