For six years, Michelle Kwan worked with fashion designer Vera Wang to create elegant and functional figure skating costumes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cShe knows me in terms of my lines,\u201d Kwan tells PEOPLE, \u201cand she knows my body really well.\u201d<\/p>\n

For those reasons and more, Kwan is keen on Wang to design her wedding dress following Kwan\u2019s announcement of her engagement to U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Clay Pell.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI did tell her the news,\u201d says Kwan, who has been in New York City for Fashion Week. \u201cShe was like, \u2018When is it?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Kwan says that throughout her skating career, Wang would have her try on gowns at costume fittings \u201cjust for size, for a visual on what\u2019s happening for a spring or fall look,\u201d the skater recalls. \u201cShe\u2019d say, \u2018This shape would look great on you, try this on!\u2019 But I\u2019d say, \u2018Vera, I\u2019m really excited to be getting married one day, but I don\u2019t need to try on a wedding dress and if you\u2019re not engaged, it\u2019s supposed to be bad luck, right?\u2019 But she was like, \u2018Eh!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The commute from Washington, D.C., where Kwan is based, to New York City, where Wang is based, would work well for dress consultations, Kwan says.<\/strong> \u201cI have a long relationship with Vera, so I hope she does it.\u201d<\/p>\n

A custom-made gown would go quite well with Kwan\u2019s custom-made platinum engagement ring, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had gotten a sense of some of the things that Michelle would like by looking around,\u201d Pell says, \u201cbut I really wanted [our] two initials, M and C, so I had that part made.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for the diamond, \u201cthe shape I thought looked best on her fingers was an oval,\u201d Pell says, \u201cwhich was also the shape of an ice rink. I liked that, and I thought that looked the best because she has such thin, long fingers.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Kwan, \u201cmy favorite parts are the details he thought long and hard about, like the M and the C. It\u2019s so pretty.\u201d<\/p>\n
