PSY and MC Hammer really stole the show at the American Music Awards<\/a> on Nov 18, dancing together in a mash-up of ‘Gangnam Style<\/a>‘ and Hammer’s 1991 hit ‘Too Legit To Quit<\/a>.’<\/p>\n

If you haven’t seen it yet, I urge you to check it out here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But as Gil Asakawa<\/a> and SeoulBeats<\/a> pointed out, that didn’t stop racists from making snide remarks about the ‘chink’ who stole the American Music Awards.<\/p>\n

Ridiculous, I know.<\/p>\n

Incidents like these suck for a whole lot of reasons, but it’s also a reminder that even as K-Pop makes inroads into mainstream American culture, it will face obstacles that it never had to deal with when it began making waves in other parts of the world.<\/p>\n

But if K-Pop execs asked for my advice, here’s what I’d tell them.<\/p>\n

K-Pop is great, great music. Detractors range from vulgar racists to ‘aficionados’ of discerning taste who like to shoot down K-Pop as some spinoff of American pop that’s void of creativity.<\/p>\n

Don’t listen to them.<\/p>\n

Next, keep K-Pop Korean. Don’t bother with singing the entire album in English. BoA Kwon tried this several years ago. Didn’t work. Keep it Korean. It worked for PSY, and it should work for the industry.<\/p>\n
