{"id":15027,"date":"2013-02-27T02:02:47","date_gmt":"2013-02-27T02:02:47","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2013-02-27T02:02:47","modified_gmt":"2013-02-27T02:02:47","slug":"Chinese-online-users-shocked-at-cruel-plight-of-abandoned-dogs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asiancemagazine.com\/?p=15027","title":{"rendered":"Chinese online users shocked at cruel plight of abandoned dogs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A video clip of dead and starving Tibetan mastiffs abandoned in Hubei \u2013 and broadcast last Saturday \u2013 has attracted widespread sympathy and condemnation from Chinese internet users.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The video depicted the terrible plight of the dogs after their owner left them.<\/strong> It was broadcast on a news program by Chinese Central Television on Monday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Three mastiffs can be seen locked in a cage \u2013 two lying dead on the ground.<\/strong> A voiceover in the CCTV video said they had refused to eat food provided by strangers and starved to death waiting for their owner to return.<\/p>\n<p>Only one dog in the video is alive. It was very weak and demoralized, but still able to eat.<\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"500\" height=\"315\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/a1yOwV2gToY\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>According to the TV program, their owner, surnamed Peng, rented a kennel in Huangshi in Hubei province, last May for the mastiffs. The lease expired last Sunday. <strong>The owner, on the run from his creditors, then abandoned the animals.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The program said that five Tibetan mastiff puppies had also been foresaken. <\/strong>They were later adopted by other people. An elderly man, seen feeding the surviving dog on the video, said: \u201cWhat a tragedy. The owner has no conscience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Animal experts say Tibetan mastiffs are famous for their loyalty to owners.<\/strong> Adult dogs are reluctant to be re-housed and rarely eat food from strangers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Many popular video websites have re-posted the original video of the mastiffs. <\/strong>The dogs\u2019 plight aroused an emotional reaction from some Chinese internet users.<\/p>\n<p>Many online users noted that dogs had a special relationship with their owners as \u201cman\u2019s best friend\u201d One blogger said: \u201cEven best friends can turn against each other, <strong>but dogs never betray their owners.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another strongly denounced the dog owner. \u201cDo not raise a dog if you can\u2019t support it. And if you do, please be responsible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tibetan mastiffs are popular pets with rich Chinese.<\/strong> Originally raised as guard dogs, they are known to fetch prices between a few thousand yuan for a pup, to tens of millions for high-quality breeds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is wrong with people?
