At the Women in the World Summit in New York Thursday, actress Angelina Jolie spoke passionately about Malala Yousafzai \u2013 the 15-year-old Pakistani girl shot in the head by the Taliban because she wanted to go to school.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd here\u2019s what the gunman and the Taliban accomplished on that day,\u201d Jolie said. \u201cThey shot her at point blank range in the head and it made her stronger. In a brutal attempt to silence her voice, it grew louder – and she more resolute\u2026calling on the entire world not just Pakistan to ensure the right for every girl in the world to an education. It is my right she said\u2026it is our right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Malala, who is recovering from the gunshot wound in England and just this month went back to school, also spoke to the summit by way of video.<\/strong> She announced the first grant that she is giving from the Malala Fund – which was established to help her educate girls in Pakistan and around the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday I\u2019m going to announce the happiest moment of my life and that is the first grant of the Malala fund. In Swat, in my motherland. We are going to educate 40 girls, and I want all of you to support the Malala fund and let us turn 40 girls into 40 million girls,\u201d said Malala, who decided the first grant would go to educate girls, ages five to 12, who are engaged in domestic labor instead of going to school.<\/p>\n

And Angelina Jolie is helping Malala do just that.<\/strong> Jolie donated an additional $200,000 to the Malala Fund last night. \u201cIt\u2019s a modest beginning for a big dream,\u201d said Jolie<\/p>\n
