Eugene Godsoe, #TEAMUSA and North Carolina native, won a silver medal today with a runner-up finish in the 50-meter butterfly at the world swimming championships.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brazil’s Cesar Cielo sprinted home in a tight finish, according to FINA.org, to retain his crown and win the fifth world title of his career. <\/strong>Cielo was the world 50 and 100 freestyle champion in 2009 and 50 freestyle and 50 butterfly champion in 2011.<\/p>\n

Godsoe, a 2006 Southeast Guilford graduate, won the 50 and 100 butterfly races at the U.S. World Trials.<\/strong> Godsoe also is a graduate of Stanford, where he coaches.<\/p>\n

\u201cComing in lane 8, I knew I had no pressure,\u201d Godsoe told USA Swimming. \u201cI just had to execute. The 50 fly is just one of those events where if some of those guys are trying too hard, they\u2019re going to be a little bit slower. So I knew if I could go a tenth or two-tenths faster (than I swam in semifinals), I\u2019d have a chance to medal in it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Godsoe will swim in the 100m butterfly, with prelims Friday and the final Saturday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m really excited for the 100,\u201d he told USA Swimming. \u201cI knew coming in if I could match, or even come close to my 50 time, I was going to have a great 100. For me to go three-tenths faster, I\u2019ve got some speed in me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eugene’s mom is Japanese!<\/strong> So it’s not surprising that he is a piano prodigy as well! lol!! Loving our stereotypes!<\/p>\n
