She was brought to a nearby hospital but was only pronounced dead.

“I am proud to be the daughter of my mother. I have nothing but gratitude for everything she did for me,” Utada said on her website on Monday. The 30-year old musician is the only daughter of Fuji and was born in New York, where Fuji stayed after retiring from the entertainment business. Fuji was 62 years old when she died of apparent suicide.

The police found no suicide note left by Fuji, but Utada said that her mother had been suffering from mental illness. “She is finally freed from her agony,” Utada shared. Fuji also shared the apartment with a man who claimed to be sleeping at the time of the incident. Besides being famous as an enka singer in the 1970s, Keiko Fuji also pursued acting, although the time she spent in the entertainment industry was fairly short. Her debut album Shinjuku no Onna (“Woman in Shinjuku”) spent 20 weeks in the Oricon charts.

Hikaru Utada has finally spoken about the death of her mother last Thursday.
