{"id":16108,"date":"2013-09-17T04:09:26","date_gmt":"2013-09-17T04:09:26","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2013-09-17T04:09:37","modified_gmt":"2013-09-17T04:09:37","slug":"Man-killed-in-swim-to-North-Korea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asiancemagazine.com\/?p=16108","title":{"rendered":"Man killed in swim to North Korea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A man who tried to swim across a river to North Korea was killed by a rain of bullets fired at him by South Korean soldiers, a military official said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The shooting took place Monday afternoon at the heavily fortified border that separates the two Koreas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The South Korean man managed to get past a barbed wire fence by the bank of the Imjin River<\/strong>, which flows through part of the Demilitarized Zone between the two countries, and then jumped into the water with a Styrofoam float, Brig. Gen. Cho Jong-sul said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe kept warning him verbally to come back to land,\u201d Cho said at a news conference. \u201cThe river was only about 800 meters wide where he jumped in. It wouldn\u2019t have taken long for him to swim across with the float.
