Bill de Blasio\u2019s Chinese name is Bai Si Hao. It has three characters that, roughly translated, mean \u201cwhite,\u201d \u201cthinking\u201d and \u201cstrong.\u201d These same three characters are used for de Blasio\u2019s name in all Chinese newspapers, and will appear on the ballot on Election Day Nov. 5.<\/p>\n
But the mayoral candidate didn\u2019t always have a single, uniform Chinese name.<\/p>\n
At the beginning of de Blasio\u2019s 2009 campaign for New York City public advocate, Chinese newspapers created their own phonetic transliterations of \u201cde Blasio.\u201d From paper to paper, there were slight variations in the characters used to represent his name in Mandarin.<\/p>\n
To ward off confusion, de Blasio enlisted the help of City Comptroller John Liu to create his \u201cofficial\u201d Chinese name.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s important to have what\u2019s considered a good Chinese name as opposed to simply a phoneticized name,\u201d said Liu, who was born in Taiwan.<\/p>\n Bai Si Hao, with its three meaningful characters, mirrors the structure of typical Chinese names.<\/strong> Chinese names normally have two or three characters, with the surname written first.
