There’s something about a multicultural wedding that symbolizes this in a particularly touching way. Bringing families together who don’t speak the same language and who are unfamiliar with each other’s customs can be daunting. But seeing parents and even grandparents reaching across those language and culture barriers in the name of love is simply magical.

It is in this spirit that we want to share with you Annie & Henry’s wedding. Annie is Korean American, and Henry is Chinese American. Bride and groom definitely wanted to have the white dress dream wedding, but they didn’t forget about their families in the planning process. They could have chosen to do a traditional American wedding, or to incorporate one of their cultures into the day, but they were firm that they wanted to represent all cultural parts of them as a couple: American, Chinese, and Korean.

For Annie, this meant 3 outfit changes! But she handled it like a pro. First she wore her white princess gown for bridal portraits at their gorgeous venue, The James Leary Flood Mansion in San Francisco.

After portraits, she and Henry both changed into hanbok for the Korean ceremony paebaek. Annie’s family eagerly explained to Henry’s family that the couple would bow to them, and then relatives would get to throw dates and chestnuts for the couple to catch. The number they caught represented how many children they would have. Relatives also had the opportunity to offer their words of wisdom and well wishes. There was much laughter about how many relatives wished them plentiful children.

Back upstairs in Annie’s dressing room with the breathtaking view, she changed into her beautiful (and might we add sexy!) red cheongsam (chipao), a Chinese dress given to her by her mother-in-law. This time it was Henry’s family’s turn to explain to Annie’s family the tradition of the Chinese tea ceremony. Bride and groom served tea in special cups to their relatives, who in turn gave them red envelopes with gifts inside.

One last change back into her white dress, and Annie & Henry commenced their western wedding ceremony in the courtyard of the mansion. By incorporating all of their cultures, they not only made both of their families feel at home, they also gave their guests a truly fun and unique experience. Here’s to sharing traditions with friends and family, whatever they may be!

Vendors:
Photography: Chung Li Photography
Event Design and Planning: Honey & Twine Weddings and Events
Ceremony & Reception: The James Leary Flood Mansion
Videography: In House Goods
Catering: McCalls Catering and Events
Hair and Makeup: Joey of JBeautique
Cake: Cake Coquette
Florist: A.
