{"id":17921,"date":"2014-10-31T02:10:44","date_gmt":"2014-10-31T02:10:44","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2025-10-15T14:16:19","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T14:16:19","slug":"chow-yun-fat-backs-pro-democracy-demonstrations-in-hong-kong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asiancemagazine.com\/?p=17921","title":{"rendered":"Chow Yun-Fat backs pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>You know you&#8217;re making progress when celebrities start stepping up to your protests!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Chow Yun-Fat, the Asian movie star best known in the U.S. for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hard Boiled, is standing firm against a possible career backlash for lending support to the pro-democracy demonstrators in his native Hong Kong.<\/strong> Since September, students and others who make up Occupy Central With Love and Peace have gathered outside Chinese government headquarters and demanded electoral reform, and there have been repeated clashes with police.<\/p>\n<p>Several other Hong Kong celebrities cautiously supported the protests, but according to reports, Chinese state-run media are trying to tamp down such public statements by threatening boycotts of artists\u2019 film or music. Asian celebrities are being pressured to choose sides, but Chow hasn\u2019t been easily cowed. In a response to the threat of being blacklisted, he told Hong Kong\u2019s Next magazine that \u201cI\u2019ll just make less [movies] then,\u201d according to The New York Times.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, the Chinese Digital Times, a U.S.-based site that reports China\u2019s censorship commands, claimed that Beijing was cracking down and ordering websites to delete mentions of Chow\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Chow gave an interview to Hong Kong\u2019s Apple Daily, where he said, \u201cI\u2019ve met the residents, the students\u2014they are very brave and it\u2019s touching to see that they\u2019re fighting for what they want. The students are reasonable. If the government can come up with a solution that the citizens or students are satisfied with, I believe the crisis will end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>He added,<\/strong> \u201cWhen the government uses violent measures on students, it\u2019s a turn-off for the people of Hong Kong. I don\u2019t wish to see anyone getting hurt\u2026 it was a peaceful demonstration and there was no need for any violence or tear gas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chow is current making The Man From Macau 2, a sequel to one of China\u2019s biggest 2014 movies, directed by Wong Jing (Red Dragon).<\/p>\n<p><em>Source <a href=\"http:\/\/insidemovies.ew.com\">www.insidemovies.ew.com<\/a><\/em><br \/>\n<!--break--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You know you&#8217;re making progress when celebrities start stepping up to your protests!
