{"id":18041,"date":"2014-11-19T01:11:08","date_gmt":"2014-11-19T01:11:08","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2014-11-19T01:11:22","modified_gmt":"2014-11-19T01:11:22","slug":"New-York-City-to-have-an-official-Korean-American-Day-","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asiancemagazine.com\/?p=18041","title":{"rendered":"New York City to have an official Korean American Day?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>On Nov. 24, the New York City Council will consider making Jan. 13 Korean American Day, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.koreatimesus.com\/will-new-york-city-get-an-official-korean-american-day\/\">The Korea Times<\/a> English language edition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Council member Peter Koo introduced a resolution proposing the action in September.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>    On Jan. 13, 1903, the SS Gaelic arrived in Honolulu carrying 102 Koreans.<\/p>\n<p>    \u201cKorean Americans have made tremendous contributions to all sectors of our society, such as law, government, the visual and performing arts, business, academia, medicine and science, including the development of the first beating heart operation for coronary artery disease,\u201d the legislation text reads.<\/p>\n<p>There are more than 1.4 million Korean Americans in the U.S., with nearly 100,000 living in the New York area.
