State Attorney General Kamala Harris got an early boost from the White House for her 2016 U.S.<\/strong> Senate race Monday, as she was tapped to be the high-profile messenger of how President Obama\u2019s executive actions on immigration are helping California\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n

Harris said Obama\u2019s recent actions, including expanding the number of undocumented immigrants protected from immediate deportation, will boost California\u2019s economy \u201cby anywhere from $11.7 billion to $27.5 billion over the next decade.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harris, describing herself as a \u201cdaughter of immigrants,\u201d delivered an impassioned defense during a phone news conference on Obama\u2019s immigration policies. Although it plowed no new ground on the issue, the news conference gave Harris a plum opportunity to address a major state issue with the White House\u2019s imprimatur. It also provided her with a venue to air her own talking points.<\/p>\n

The White House\u2019s decision to have Harris promote Obama\u2019s policies underscored speculation that she can expect both campaign and fundraising help from the president when she runs next year to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer. Harris\u2019 ties to Obama go back to before his 2008 presidential campaign, when she became one of the first public officials to endorse him and campaigned for him in early-primary states.<\/p>\n

Harris praised Obama\u2019s recent move to suspend the Secure Communities program, which sought to enlist local law enforcement\u2019s help in deporting undocumented immigrants. Replacing it with a focus on terrorism, hard-core gangs and felons, she said, means that \u201crather than apprehending and removing immigrants who have no criminal background,\u201d law enforcement will be concentrating on \u201ctrue threats\u201d to public safety. <\/p>\n
