Bollywood superstar and the “Peepli Live” producer Aamir Khan believes his film will benefit from the massive popularity of 2008’s “Slumdog Millionaire.”<\/p>\n
But he does not believe the film — directed by Brit Danny Boyle –reflects Indian film culture.<\/p>\n
“Audiences here in the US see that as an Indian film,” Khan tells PopcornBiz. “But Indians don’t perceive that as an Indian film because Danny is not Indian.<\/p>\n
“While it’s about India, I don’t think it’s an Indian film,” he added. “I don’t feel the point of view is Indian. It’s Danny’s point of view, which is a great point of view.”<\/p>\n
Khan said he’s a big admirer of Boyle and his work. Further, the film has done its part in opening the door to India’s film culture in the United States. The film won a stunning eight Oscars and became the feel good story of the 2009 awards season.<\/p>\n
“It only helps,” says Khan. “As a result of ‘Slumdog’ people are more interested in Indian films and might want to experience them over here.”<\/p>\n
But he also pointed out that this has been a gradual shift which he saw with “Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India” which was nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar after its 2001 release. Khan starred and produced in the film depicting a village’s quest to lower taxes by winning a cricket match against their local British rulers.<\/p>\n
“But I do feel the door is still opening,” says Khan.<\/p>\n
Khan’s latest film, which he produced but opted not to star in, is “Peepli Live” which depicts a peasant who finds the only way out of his financial crisis is the financial benefits of suicide. It opens Aug. 13.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
