Civil rights groups are proposing their own vision of how New York City’s election district maps could be redrawn for state legislative offices. Their goal is to protect the voting rights of blacks, Latinos and Asian Americans.<\/p>\n
The groups have unveiled what they call a “unity map” for new state Assembly and state Senate districts. They say it reflects the new demographic realities evidenced by the 2010 Census.<\/p>\n
State legislative district boundaries are remapped every 10 years to reflect demographic changes demonstrated by the federal census. The politically contentious process is known as redistricting.<\/p>\n
The groups say they submitted their proposal Tuesday to the state task force responsible for redrawing the legislative district boundaries.<\/p>\n
They say they wanted to submit their proposal before the task force announces a decision.
