Vice chair Assembly Member Mary Hayashi (D-Hayward) and the Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus are co-hosting the California Asian and Pacific Islander Policy Summit from April 30 to May 1, 2012 at the Sacramento Convention Center. The summit, entitled, \u201ciADVOCATE\u201d brings together Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to discuss critical policy and race issues.
\n\u201cThis is an important forum for Asian Pacific Islander Americans to bring attention to the many issues impacting this diverse community \u2013 from bullying and education, to immigration and healthcare,\u201d stated Assembly Member Hayashi. \u201cThese problems are not new, and are part of a long history of challenges faced by Asian Pacific Islander Americans. But every generation brings new hope, and this summit is designed to help those young people become more involved in finding the solutions.\u201d
\nCo-sponsored by the California Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs, the Asian American Education Institute and the Asian Pacific Islanders California Action Network, the summit kicks off May’s Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month, where communities across the country celebrate the contributions and recognize the trials of this diverse population.
\nThroughout their history, Asian Pacific Islander Americans have had to overcome tremendous odds, including pervasive social and institutional discrimination. iADVOCATE places this continuing challenge in a current context, exploring how the media and entertainment industry still fortify barriers against Asian Pacific Islander representation and empowerment.
\nAs seen in recent documentaries about women and the media, negative treatments and the lack of positive images of Asian Pacific Islander Americans in the media have a wide-ranging and significant impact. They influence both how Asian Pacific Islander Americans feel about themselves and how society treats them. The results are disturbing, with a lack of Asian Pacific Islander Americans in political office and Asian American students being more likely to experience bullying than their peers of other races.
\niADVOCATE focuses on giving young Asian Pacific Islander Americans an alternative image of themselves, and the means to create social change. With the support of inspirational Asian Pacific Islander American speakers and leaders, including keynote speaker Congresswoman Judy Chu\u2014the first Chinese American woman to serve in Congress, the summit will discuss policy issues with an emphasis on mobilizing youth and promoting civic engagement.
\niADVOCATE also features an awards gala dinner on Monday night to recognize individuals and organizations that have made an impact on Asian Pacific Islander communities. This year, State Controller John Chiang, Attorney General Kamala Harris, Board of Equalization Members Betty Yee and Michelle Steel will receive the Policy Impact Award.
\nDave Low, executive director for the California School Employees Association will receive an award for exceptional leadership. In addition, Kollaboration, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting Asians and Pacific Islanders in entertainment, and Hyphen Magazine will receive the Community Impact Award.
\nAssemblymember Hayashi is the Chair of the Business, Professions, and Consumer Protection Committee and serves the 18th Assembly District, which includes San Leandro, Hayward, Dublin, most of Castro Valley and Pleasanton, and a portion of Oakland, as well as the unincorporated areas of Ashland, Cherryland, San Lorenzo and Sunol.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
