An advisory group to encourage more Asian-Americans to seek jobs in state government is set to be formed under a new law signed by Gov. Pat Quinn Friday.<\/p>\n
“We’ve gotta go out there across Illinois and make sure our Asian-American population in our state, almost 5 percent of the people, is well-reflected in the ranks of our state government,” said Quinn.<\/p>\n
House Bill 4510 calls for the creation of an 11-member Asian-American Employment Plan Advisory Council. That council is to examine how many Asian-Americans are employed by the state, the barriers they face with state employment, and incentives that could foster employment of Asian-Americans.<\/p>\n
“It’s important that our state employees really reflect the diversity of Illinois and reach out to the world, he said.”<\/p>\n
The law also calls for the state to create and implement an Asian-American employment plan.<\/p>\n
The text of this law adds to a statute requiring a Hispanic Employment Plan, the first of which was required to be turned in to the Secretary of State in 1993.<\/p>\n
