{"id":19772,"date":"2012-11-15T23:11:35","date_gmt":"2012-11-15T23:11:35","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2012-11-15T23:11:35","modified_gmt":"2012-11-15T23:11:35","slug":"asian-american-police-group-assists-ny-cops-with-donated-items","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asiancemagazine.com\/?p=19772","title":{"rendered":"Asian American Police Group Assists NY Cops With Donated Items"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ever since Hurricane Sandy hit, New York police officers have been working around the clock to restore order and keep their city safe.<\/p>\n<p>Many haven&#8217;t even had the time to cope with their own losses suffered because of Sandy.<\/p>\n<p>But as CBS 2?s Mai Martinez reports, some Chicago officers are stepping up to ease their burden.<\/p>\n<p><script type='text\/javascript' src='http:\/\/CBSCHI.images.worldnow.com\/interface\/js\/WNVideo.js?rnd=459268;hostDomain=video.chicago.cbslocal.com;playerWidth=385;playerHeight=288;isShowIcon=true;clipId=7969667;flvUri=;partnerclipid=;adTag=News;advertisingZone=CBS.CHI%252Fworldnowplayer;enableAds=true;landingPage=;islandingPageoverride=false;playerType=STANDARD_EMBEDDEDscript;controlsType=fixed'><\/script><a href=\"http:\/\/video.chicago.cbslocal.com\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For a week, donations have been pouring in \u2014 everything from food, clothing, to toys and cleaning supplies.<\/p>\n<p>All of it is headed to New York City to help police officers coping in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile most people are taking time off work to deal with what&#8217;s happened back home, they&#8217;re actually out there on patrol working long hours, and they have no help for themselves. They don&#8217;t have time to gather the things necessary for their family,\u201d says Norman Kwong, president of Asian American Law Enforcement Association.<\/p>\n<p>The Chicago-based organization decided to help the NYPD officers, some of whom were in Chicago just a few months ago for a conference. The New York officers are in need of pet food, diapers, among other things, Kwong says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt helps family members get their houses in order,\u201d retired Chicago police officer Mal Woo says. \u201cTake a little pressure off of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The response from businesses and people in Chicago has been overwhelming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s surprising, but we&#8217;re really grateful and thankful,\u201d Kwong says.<\/p>\n<p>By phone, the NYPD officer who&#8217;s in charge of handing out all the donations there says it&#8217;s awesome they&#8217;re getting this kind of support from the Chicago area.<\/p>\n<p>The local members of AALEA say they will make additional shipments if donations keep coming in.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ever since
