{"id":20090,"date":"2013-04-03T03:04:07","date_gmt":"2013-04-03T03:04:07","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2013-04-03T03:04:07","modified_gmt":"2013-04-03T03:04:07","slug":"ap-drops-illegal-immigrant-the-times-also-reconsidering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asiancemagazine.com\/?p=20090","title":{"rendered":"AP Drops \u2018Illegal Immigrant,\u2019 The Times Also Reconsidering"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bowing to growing pressure, The Associated Press on Tuesday dropped the controversial term \u201cillegal immigrant\u201d from its widely used and referenced Stylebook.<\/p>\n<p>The updated entry explains:<\/p>\n<p>    Except in direct quotes essential to the story, use illegal only to refer to an action, not a person: illegal immigration, but not illegal immigrant. Acceptable variations include living in or entering a country illegally or without legal permission.<\/p>\n<p>Pro-immigrant advocates and media outlets who have long advocated for the change celebrated the news.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did it! AP Drops the I-Word!\u2026 This is HUGE!!!!\u201d posted on his Facebook page Roberto Lovato, a strategist at Presente.org who was part of a group that launched a national grassroots campaign to raise awareness and get the media and public officials to stop using the term.<\/p>\n<p>AP didn&#8217;t credit the activists but acknowledged in a blog post explaining the decision that: \u201cThe discussions on this topic have been wide-ranging and include many people from many walks of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>AP said that it has been \u201cridding the Stylebook of labels\u2026 And that discussion about labeling people, instead of behavior, led us back to \u2018illegal immigrant&#8217; again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last October, The New York Times&#8217; public editor Margaret Sullivan considered dropping the offensive term but stuck to it, saying \u201cI see no advantage for Times readers in a move away from the paper&#8217;s use of the phrase \u2018illegal immigrant.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the tide seems to be changing at the New York Times too. Colorlines, which was part of the original Drop the I-Word campaign over three years ago, reported on AP&#8217;s decision, and added a tweet by Sullivan saying:<\/p>\n<p>    On \u201cillegal immigrants\u201d: I&#8217;m told that @nytimes is also working on revisions to its usage category_idelines to \u201cprovide more nuance and options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A later blog post by Sullivan says, \u201cFrom what I can gather, The Times&#8217;s changes will not be nearly as sweeping as The A.P.&#8217;s.\u201d While she does not believe the publication would outright ban the term, \u201cit will \u2018provide more nuance and options&#8217; for what term to use, said Philip B.
