The Hate Crimes Prevention Project<\/b> is a collaboration between the Organization of Chinese Americans, New York Chapter (OCA-NY), the Ana Luisa Garcia Youth Center, Chinatown Youth Initiatives (CYI), South Asian Youth Action! (SAYA!), and the United Puerto Rican Organization of Sunset Park (UPROSE)<\/b>. Student interns from each youth organization participated in a 4-week summer training to learn ways to combat hate crimes. Using art to address how hate crimes can be prevented, the student interns devised the rules and themes for a city-wide art contest open to all high school students to compete. The submissions will be showcased to the public at the Asian\/Pacific\/American Institute at NYU 41-51 E. 11th Street, 7th Floor Gallery at NYU from August 11-22. The Hate Crimes Prevention Project is an opportunity for youth to use art as an activism tool to prevent hate crimes, as well as a way to promote cross-cultural awareness, open dialogue, and coalition building.
