{"id":3711,"date":"2009-02-26T17:02:16","date_gmt":"2009-02-26T17:02:16","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2009-02-26T18:02:10","modified_gmt":"2009-02-26T18:02:10","slug":"Envisioning-Diaspora-Asian-American-Visual-Arts-Collectives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asiancemagazine.com\/?p=3711","title":{"rendered":"Envisioning Diaspora: Asian American Visual Arts Collectives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Author of the new book <strong>Envisioning Diaspora: Asian American Visual Arts Collectives (Timezone 8 Editions and project partner A\/P\/A Institute at NYU)<\/strong> and A\/P\/A Institute Director of Public Programs and Research Manager, Alexandra Chang investigates <strong>\u201cAsian American Art\u201d<\/strong> through the formation, membership and artwork of three important post-\u201990s Asian American artist collectives: Godzilla: Asian American Art Network, Godzookie and the Barnstormers.<\/p>\n<p>Through in-depth interviews with artists, arts administrators and writers, as well as the search for archival documents from university and museum archives to the storage shelves of participant artists, Chang traces the shifts within the changing historical contexts of the initial coinage of the term <strong>\u201cAsian America.\u201d<\/strong> We see how the term began as an outgrowth of the late \u201960s civil rights movement, to its integration into mainstream multicultural discourse and its legacy today.
