{"id":3921,"date":"2009-04-11T05:04:40","date_gmt":"2009-04-11T05:04:40","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2009-04-10T18:04:47","modified_gmt":"2009-04-10T18:04:47","slug":"Pressure-to-excel-","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asiancemagazine.com\/?p=3921","title":{"rendered":"Pressure to excel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We all know the stereotypes: <strong>Asian students are smart, hard-working and strong in math and science.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>People generally regard those stereotypes as harmless because they\u2019re positive, portraying <strong>Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders as the \u201cmodel minority.\u201d<\/strong> But they can put unhealthy pressure on kids who believe they\u2019re not meeting expectations, <strong>leading to relatively high suicide rates among young Asian-American women.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But it takes a toll. <strong>Asian-Americans<\/strong> have the highest rate of suicide among women 18 to 24 years old, Chou said.
