As of last night, the bidding war for the first interview with the two heroines had reportedly reached \u2018the mid six figures\u2019.<\/strong> Book publisher HarperCollins is said to have offered a cool $1million for a \u2018warts and all\u2019 account of their life during 140 days \u2018behind enemy lines\u2019.<\/p>\n

Laura, 32, describes herself as a \u2018Chinese American\u2019,<\/strong> but a friend said: \u2018She was brought up as a true Valley girl [an upper middle-class girl]. She\u2019s about as Chinese as the cuisine at Chin Chin [a popular Californian-Chinese restaurant chain].\u2019
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

For Euna<\/strong>, who was born in South Korea but moved to California when she was a university student, it was her first overseas assignment. The trip was Laura\u2019s second \u2018dangerous\u2019 foreign job for Current, a Left-wing cable television network based in San Francisco that rather grandly aspires to \u2018democratise\u2019 the news.<\/p>\n

The two women were sent to China in March to do a report about North Korean refugees pouring over the border. A source familiar with Current said: \u2018It was the sort of bleeding-hearts liberal story that would play well to their target market. But then Laura decided to take it a step further.\u2019<\/p>\n


\nWhen the girls were taken into custody, he was preparing to test a ballistic missile capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

A US State Department source said: \u2018These two naive girls became useful pawns in a much bigger chess game. The North Koreans\u2019 idea was to put them on trial, sentence them to prison camp and offer to free them for concessions.\u2019<\/p>\n

Their \u2018ordeal\u2019 appears to have been far from tough. According to Professor Han Park, an American academic who was visiting North Korea at the time, they were housed in a guest villa designed for foreign visitors outside the capital of Pyongyang.
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Professor Park said that Korean officials laughed at any suggestion that the women were receiving harsh treatment. \u2018We are not Guantanamo,\u2019 he was told.
\nThe women were allowed to receive daily letters from their husbands and parcels from home.<\/p>\n

Indeed, her worst complaint was that her rice tasted like \u2018rocks\u2019.<\/p>\n


\nThe Clinton insider said: \u2018Obama\u2019s people suggested sending Al Gore, but Kim Jong Il only wanted Bill.
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

He idolises the former President because he thinks he is a virile stud with influence in Hollywood.<\/strong> When asked to undertake a \u2018sensitive\u2019 mission to \u2018rescue\u2019 the pair, he jumped at the chance.<\/p>\n

The Clinton confidant said: \u2018This wasn\u2019t about the women \u2013 this was about a PR coup.
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Barack Obama may have defeated Bill\u2019s wife but this is the Clintons\u2019 revenge. The North Koreans are talking about nuclear disarmament but they say they will talk only to Bill. It\u2019s a win-win siteuation for everyone except Obama.<\/strong>
