{"id":6079,"date":"2010-07-26T03:07:13","date_gmt":"2010-07-26T03:07:13","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2010-07-26T03:07:48","modified_gmt":"2010-07-26T03:07:48","slug":"Smithsonian-museum-hangs-portrait-of-Norman-Mineta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asiancemagazine.com\/?p=6079","title":{"rendered":"Smithsonian museum hangs portrait of Norman Mineta"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A portrait of the first <strong>Asian Pacific American<\/strong> to hold a presidential cabinet post is being installed in the Smithsonian&#8217;s National Portrait Gallery.<\/p>\n<p>The portrait of former <strong>U.S. Transportation and Commerce Secretary Norman Mineta<\/strong> will be installed Monday, becoming part of the museum&#8217;s permanent collection.<\/p>\n<p>President <strong>Bill Clinton appointed Mineta commerce secretary in 2000, and President George W. Bush appointed him transportation secretary in 2001<\/strong>. Previously, Mineta served in Congress for 20 years, representing California.<\/p>\n<p>During World War II, <strong>Mineta and his parents, who were Japanese immigrants, were detained in an internment camp<\/strong>.
