American-Indian entrepreneur Sant Singh Chatwal <\/strong> (son Vikram, pictured above) has opened the first hotel in a new chain of luxury properties he hopes will become a global brand.<\/p>\n

The Chatwal New York<\/strong> opened August 8 in a landmark 1905 building designed by Stanford White in New York City and is the only member of the Leading Hotels of the World in the Manhattan theater district.<\/p>\n

The new property has been designed by Thierry Despont to offer “contemporary luxuries and ultra-modern technology” in a 1930s Deco design environment, with original features such as the fa\u00e7ade and floor-to-ceiling fireplace restored and incorporated into the hotel.<\/p>\n

In the Lambs Club Restaurant and Bar, The Chatwal<\/strong> has recreated the bygone days of America’s first professional theater club, which used to be based in the building, while serving favorite American meals and Prohibition-era drinks.<\/p>\n

According to Chatwal, the hotel is the first property of a series bearing the entrepreneur’s name, with further hotels planned in the UK and India.<\/p>\n

Guests can also be sure they’re in experienced hands – Sant Singh Chatwal also owns the Bombay Palace chain of restaurants and Hampshire Hotels and Resorts, while his son Vikram Chatwal runs luxury hotel group Vikram Chatwal hotels.<\/p>\n

The Chatwal is one of a series of hotels planning openings in Manhattan this year.<\/p>\n

The enormous InterContinental Times Square opened its doors in July, and The James New York is scheduled to welcome guests from September 1.<\/p>\n
