{"id":6241,"date":"2010-08-25T23:08:37","date_gmt":"2010-08-25T23:08:37","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2010-08-25T23:08:37","modified_gmt":"2010-08-25T23:08:37","slug":"Asian-Americans-Greater-Risk-of-Developing-Heart-Disease-","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asiancemagazine.com\/?p=6241","title":{"rendered":"Asian Americans Greater Risk of Developing Heart Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsroom.heart.org\/index.php?s=43&#038;item=1095\" title=\"More research needed on cardiovascular disease in Asian-Americans; data lags because studies have often counted Asian subgroups as one\">study<\/a> done by the<strong> American Heart Association<\/strong> (AHA) reveals that Asian Americans, especially those of <strong>Indian<\/strong> or <strong>Filipino<\/strong> origins, have a great risk of suffering from<strong> coronary heart disease<\/strong> compared to other sub-groups.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Japanese<\/strong> and<strong> Chinese-Am<\/strong>ericans are at a lower chance of suffering from the same disease, but they are at a greater risk of suffering from <strong>stroke<\/strong>, the research says. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Available research shows that sub-groups of Asian-Americans are at increased risk of complications and death from cardiovascular disease. Asian-Americans are often studied as a group, which masks the differences within this heterogeneous population,&#8221; claimed <strong>Dr. Latha <\/strong><strong>Palaniappan<\/strong>, chair of the American Heart Association&#8217;s Scientific Advisory on Cardiovascular Disease in Asian Americans.<br \/>\nMore research in needed in Asian American cardiovascular diseases but Dr. Palaniappan noted that Asian Americans represents 25 percent of all foreign-born people living in the United States. By 2050, there will be a projected 34 million Asian Americans living in the US.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause health surveys and questionnaires almost universally combine persons of Asian ancestry into a single group, the heterogeneity within this classification is masked,\u201d Dr. Palaniappan said.<\/p>\n<p>Major federal surveys have only recently started to classify Asian Americans into seven sub-groups: Asian Indian, Chinese, Filipino, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese and Other Asian.
