\u201cBlood Dolphins,\u201d<\/strong> the Animal Planet documentaries by Ric O\u2019Barry of “The Cove” – that premiered last month in the U.S. — will not get an airing on the Japanese version of the channel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t show all the content from Animal Planet in America, and we won\u2019t be showing that program,\u201d a staffer at Animal Planet Japan told The Hollywood Reporter<\/strong>, \u201cOur audience is largely made up of women and children, so we tend to focus on programs with cute animals.\u201d <\/p>\n

The first of the three documentaries was shot in Taiji, which O\u2019Barry made infamous last year through his Oscar-winning film<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Barry has been in Japan to draw attention to the annual dolphin hunt which begins on September 1<\/strong>, though has stayed away from Taiji on this visit. He claimed he has been threatened by nationalists not to go to the small fishing village, but has also said, \u201cmaybe it is time for us to back off,” and let local people find a solution to the issue<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

At a press conference at the Foreign Correspondents\u2019 Club of Japan on Monday, O\u2019Barry acknowledged that nationalists who had demonstrated against \u201cThe Cove\u201d had given it huge publicity and helped boost its boxoffice in Japan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Last week O’Barry presented a petition against the dolphin hunt containing 1.7 million signatures to the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo.
