Jaguar Land Rover, a unit of India’s Tata Motors Ltd., is in talks with a Chinese auto maker to establish a manufacturing and sales joint venture in China to boost the two-brand company’s paltry presence in the country’s auto market, the world’s biggest after displacing the U.S. as No. 1 last year.<\/p>\n
Tata Motors’ Chief Executive Carl-Peter Forster, said Saturday at an auto conference that Tata-owned Jaguar Land Rover wants to find a partner in China “as soon as possible”<\/strong> to manufacture and market vehicles.<\/p>\n He said the company is in “good discussions” with a Chinese auto maker but declined to name the potential partner.<\/p>\n Tata believes the Jaguar and Land Rover brands, which Tata purchased from Ford Motor Co., have “tremendous potentials” around the world.<\/p>\n But “let’s be honest they have been somewhat under-managed” for some time, even though the brands are attractive.<\/p>\n “We’re not as strong as we should be [in many markets], most notably in China,” Mr. Forster told the industry forum at China Europe International Business School in Shanghai.<\/p>\n Mr. Forster provided little detail about Tata’s plans with Jaguar Land Rover, but analysts believe the company is likely to begin assembling Land Rover sport-utility vehicles in China with a local
