{"id":7101,"date":"2010-12-30T04:12:10","date_gmt":"2010-12-30T04:12:10","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2010-12-30T04:12:29","modified_gmt":"2010-12-30T04:12:29","slug":"North-Korea-screens-Bend-it-Like-Beckham-","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asiancemagazine.com\/?p=7101","title":{"rendered":"North Korea screens &#8216;Bend it Like Beckham&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Rare treat in a nation where Western movies are usually off limits. <\/p>\n<p>North Koreans got a rare treat this week: a state TV broadcast of the British soccer film &#8220;Bend it Like Beckham.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The 2002 film starring Keira Knightley and Jonathan Rhys Myers was a break from the regular programming of news, documentaries and soap operas. <strong>Western films are largely off limits in the isolated country.<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nThe broadcast, monitored in Seoul on Dec. 26, appeared to be edited; it was only an hour long.<\/p>\n<p>In a tweet Thursday, British Ambassador to South Korea Martin Uden called the broadcast the <strong>&#8220;1st ever western-made film to air on TV&#8221; in North Korea. The British Embassy arranged it. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Bend it Like Beckham&#8221; features a sport beloved among North Koreans, but it also taboo topics, like interracial relationships, homosexuality and religion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2010\/dec\/30\/rare-treat-nkorea-screens-bend-it-like-beckham\/\" title=\"SOURCE\">SOURCE<\/a><br \/>\n<!--break--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rare treat in a nation where Western movies are usually off limits.
