Writing in a language which was not originally one\u2019s own has been the subject of heated debate, particularly in India where the gulf between authors writing in English and those who write in India\u2019s many local languages is social as much as it is linguistic.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Not only is English the language of the elite, but it also sits uncomfortably with many who see it as a vestige of British imperial domination that was supposed to have ended with Independence in 1947.<\/p>\n

But at a panel on \u201cImperial English,\u201d at the Jaipur Literature Festival on Monday afternoon, Nobel laureate John Maxwell Coetzee, argued that the limitations of writing in a language that is not one\u2019s mother tongue did not vanish even once the \u201cimperialist,\u201d or second language, had been fully mastered.<\/p>\n
