It’s a tradition to hit the shops to buy Lunar New Year goodies. But as internet-enabled mobile devices gain popularity, that tradition has gone online.<\/p>\n

Kueh Bangkit remains the all-time favourite Lunar New Year cookie, according to the latest Yahoo! Search Trend results. Singaporeans are also searching Kueh Lapis, Pineapple tarts, Bak Kwa, Love Letters and Abalone.<\/p>\n

But they are not just searching Lunar New Year goodies, they’re also buying online. Fiona Shi, who is a frequent online shopper, said: “Unfortunately, time just doesn’t permit me to go down to town. I’d like to enjoy the festivity, but it is just a better alternative.”<\/p>\n

Giving customers the online alternative is Yang Yang cookies which said online orders accounted for up to three per cent of total sales last year.<\/p>\n

“This year, so far, we saw a tremendous jump in the number of people who came to our website to buy our cookies. This range from our old customers of last year and new customers,” said Yang Yang Cookies spokesperson Cho Peilin. “A lot of them have also gained confidence in the ability of the business of delivering. So the amount in each order has also increased. Overall, I would say online sales amount to five per cent,” added Cho.<\/p>\n
