The art industry, one of the glitzier pieces of the global economy, seems to have shrugged off the 2009 recession with nonchalance. In 2010, Christie\u2019s had the best year in its 245-year history.<\/p>\n<p>The auction house\u2019s numbers, released in late January, show its sales of art last year hit $5 billion, up 53% from 2009. Sotheby\u2019s, too, posted astronomical results in 2010, based on reports from individual auctions; the firm\u2019s aggregate numbers are due out in April.<\/p>\n<p>Growth came across the board \u2014 and from across the world. Pablo Picasso\u2019s \u201cNude, Green Leaves, and Bust\u201d set a record for the most expensive art ever sold at an auction, going to a telephone bidder for US$106.5 million. Art sales in the Americas remained the most lucrative \u2014 almost $2 billion in 2010 (up 111% from 2009), but sales in Hong Kong doubled from a year earlier. <strong>Globally, Asian art \u2014 including jadeite, Chinese ceramics, cloisonn\u00e9 and contemporary works \u2014 pulled in $882.9 million in sales for the year for Christie\u2019s.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/scene\/2011\/02\/17\/how-high-can-the-art-market-go\/\" title=\"SOURCE\">SOURCE<\/a><br \/>\n<!--break--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The good times continue: \u201cSelf-Portrait\u201d by Andy Warhol, seen here on display at Christie\u2019s New York preview in January.
