{"id":8074,"date":"2011-03-22T03:03:36","date_gmt":"2011-03-22T03:03:36","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2011-03-22T03:03:29","modified_gmt":"2011-03-22T03:03:29","slug":"The-Decade-s-Best-Product-Designs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asiancemagazine.com\/?p=8074","title":{"rendered":"The Decade\u2019s Best Product Designs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Yves B\u00e9har has a message for corporate honchos: Trust your designers.  \u201cDesigners need to be trusted and [treated] as equals by CEOs,\u201d says the Switzerland-born industrial designer. \u201cUnless they\u2019re elevated to a point where they are peers to people in marketing, good design will not happen.\u201d  Mr. B\u00e9har boasts a resume impressive enough for him to make such a claim. He began his career designing server computers and laptops for companies such as Hewlett-Packard and Apple, and later founded fuseproject, a San Francisco-based industrial-design agency, where he\u2019s worked on high-profile projects such as the Mission One electric motorcycle. Currently, he is focusing on the next generation of the One Laptop per Child Association\u2019s XO laptop.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Designing the original $100 laptop for the One Laptop charity was one of the biggest challenges of his career, says Mr. B\u00e9har. \u201cWe had to deliver a laptop in the right size and [capable of] the right performance at an affordable price. On top of that, the dollar lost 40% of its value [while we were building it]!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>In Asia alone, One Laptop Per Child donated the following:<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nAfghanistan (11,000 laptops received from G1G1 program)<br \/>\nCambodia (3,200 laptops received from G1G1 program)<br \/>\nMongolia (10,000 laptops received from G1G1 program)<\/p>\n<p><strong>A regular visitor to Asia\u2014\u201dWe manufacture a lot and I work a lot here\u201d\u2014Mr. B\u00e9har was recently in Singapore to launch the Sayl chair for Herman Miller. His five favorite industrial designs from the last decade are the following:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. The iPhone and iPad<br \/>\n2. The Tesla Model S electric saloon car<br \/>\n3. LED lighting<br \/>\n4. 132 5. Issey Miyake fabric<br \/>\n5.
