{"id":8171,"date":"2011-04-01T04:04:28","date_gmt":"2011-04-01T04:04:28","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2011-04-01T04:04:28","modified_gmt":"2011-04-01T04:04:28","slug":"Writers-Workshop-to-Hold-Quake-Fundraiser-in-NYC","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asiancemagazine.com\/?p=8171","title":{"rendered":"Writers\u2019 Workshop to Hold Quake Fundraiser in NYC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Mother\u2019s Milk,\u201d a Japan earthquake fundraiser, will be held on Sunday, April 3, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Asian American Writers\u2019 Workshop<\/strong>, 110-112 W. 27th St., 6th Floor (between 6th and 7th avenues), Buzzer 600.<\/p>\n<p>The event is co-sponsored by the Asian\/Pacific\/American Institute at NYU.<\/p>\n<p>To support the relief effort, AAWW is hosting poet, musician, and new mother <strong>Ishle Yi Park<\/strong>, who\u2019s flying into town from Kauai. The New York Times writes, \u201cMs. Park has an angelic face and the soul of a rock star.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019ll be joined by poet-activist <strong>Suheir Hammad<\/strong>, whose work <strong>Naomi Shihab Nye<\/strong> has called \u201ca brave flag over the dispossessed.\u201d Musician <strong>Taiyo Na<\/strong>, writer and editor Chiwan Choi, and others will also share the stage.<\/p>\n<p>Proceeds from the event will be donated to <strong>Save the Children<\/strong>, which has launched a $5 million appeal on behalf of the children of Japan. The program will also mark 100 days since the birth of Park\u2019s daughter, Sulei.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Park\u2019s given name means \u201cmorning dew\u201d in Korean.<\/strong> Once upon a time she was the poet laureate of Queens, N.Y., and now she lives in Hawaii. Her first book, \u201cThe Temperature of This Water,\u201d won the PEN America Open Book Award for Outstanding Writers of Color. Her work has been published in Ploughshares, Manoa, The Beacon Best, and Best American Poetry. Park was a touring cast member of Def Poetry Jam and regular on the HBO series, and has opened for artists such as KRS-One, Ben Harper, De La Soul, and Saul Williams.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hammad was born in October 1973 in Amman, Jordan to Palestinian refugee parents and immigrated with her family to Brooklyn when she was five years old.<\/strong> She is the author of \u201cbreaking poems\u201d (recipient of a 2009 American Book Award), \u201cZaatarDiva,\u201d \u201cBorn Palestinian,\u201d \u201cBorn Black\u201d and \u201cDrops of This Story.\u201d An original writer and performer in the Tony Award-winning \u201cRussell Simmons Presents Def Poetry Jam on Broadway,\u201d Hammad appears in the 2008 Cannes Film Festival official selection \u201cSalt of This Sea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Honored by Gov. David Paterson and the State of New York for his \u201clegacy of leadership to the Asian American community and the Empire State\u201d in May 2010, <strong>Na is a singer, songwriter, MC, and producer<\/strong>. His debut album, \u201cLove Is Growth\u201d (Issilah Productions, 2008) established him as a multidimensional talent with a unique voice that fuses the rhythms of the city that raised him with the soul of the Asian immigrant culture that birthed him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Choi\u2019s poems and essays have appeared in numerous journals and magazines<\/strong>, including ONTHEBUS and Esquire, and his first major collection of poetry, \u201cThe Flood,\u201d was published by T\u00eda Chucha Press in April 2010. He holds an MFA in dramatic writing from the Tisch School at NYU, and now lives in Los Angeles, where he and his wife recently launched Writ Large Press.<\/p>\n<p><em>The event is open to the public.
