But Ping, which opened with little fanfare in late 2009 in the heart of the city’s bustling IT (information technology) zone of Koramangala, serves a specialty dim sum menu that’s nearly authentic.

Of course, the larger menu offers pan-Asian with selections from Chinese, Indonesian, Malaysian and Thai cooking. Nevertheless, the novelty of eating light and fluffy dim sum for an entire meal (and not just as a starter, as it has always been considered in India) have made this restaurant a success.

The best lunch option is the “Yum Cha @Ping” (450 rupees, or $10), which lets you sample the best from their menu. This set includes a soup, any six varieties of dim sum (both vegetarian and nonvegetarian, three pieces each) and complimentary iced tea or Chinese jasmine tea. You can also order a la carte dim-sum dishes; a platter of six vegetarian choices costs 305 rupees; nonvegetarian, 375 rupees; seafood, 425 rupees. Ask your waiter for suggestions or go with the chef’s recommendations — the unusual roasted pumpkin dumplings (vegetarian) and the fish and shitake dumplings (non-vegetarian).

Ping’s website claims, “A truly fine meal is enjoyed not once but three times, in anticipation, in consumption, and in remembrance.” Ignore the surliness that crops up among the wait staff, focus on the food and you will end up with a fine meal.

Ping, No, 130, 1st Cross, 5th Block, Koramangala, Bangalore.
