For the first time in the short history of the Man Booker International Prize, two Chinese writers have made the list of 13 finalists. Su Tong and Wang Anyi are being considered for the prize, worth \u00a360,000 (about $98,000). It is awarded every two years for achievements in fiction, and takes into account a body of work by an author whose books are generally available in English. Rohinton Mistry, who emigrated from India to Canada in 1975, is also a finalist.<\/p>\n

The international prize, established in 2005, is sponsored by investment firm Man Group PLC\u2014the group behind the presitigious, 43-year-old Man Booker Prize, which is awarded annually for a single work of contemporary fiction by a citizen of the Commonwealth or Ireland.<\/p>\n

Mr. Su, who lives in Beijing, is probably best known for his novella, \u201cWives and Concubines,\u201d which was the basis of Chinese director Zhang Yimou\u2019s popular film, \u201cRaise the Red Lantern.\u201d (In the U.S., the book name was subsequently changed to match the title of the movie.) In 2009, Mr. Su\u2019s novel, \u201cThe Boat to Redemption,\u201d won the Man Asian Literary Prize. Mr. Su has written seven novels and more than 120 short stories.<\/strong><\/p>\n
