In the documentary \u201cBachelor Mountain,\u201d San Liangzi is a middle-age, divorced logger living in China\u2019s snowy northeast province of Heilongjiang. Excessive logging and toughening environmental regulations have pushed the local economy to the edge, and many of the inhabitants \u2014 especially the women \u2014 have long since moved to the city for work.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAny old loser can find a man here,\u201d says one of the female villagers interviewed. \u201cMost women move to the city. They don\u2019t want to live here in the sticks. We\u2019d all leave if we could.\u201d Mr. San works occasional odd jobs, and he pines for one of the few single women in town. Wang Meizi \u2014 attractive but masculine\u2014lives with her parents and runs an inn. Mr. San has carried a torch for her for years, but she has no interest in marriage. \u201cWe all know she\u2019s a lesbian,\u201d Mr. San\u2019s friends tell him in an effort to get him to move on, but he brushes them off with a wave of his hand.<\/p>\n

The film is a slow-paced and fascinating look at the enormous changes in China as it lurches toward modernity. Director Yu Guangyi followed Mr. San \u2014 a childhood friend \u2014 for two years, getting his subject to reveal intimate details about a kind of rural life that is alien to most viewers.<\/strong><\/p>\n
