Located on the island of Borneo, Sarawak is truly a melting pot, with 26 ethnic groups living harmoniously regardless of race or religion. As diverse as its cultural heritage are layered cakes, unique to this Malaysia state. A similar confectionery from neighbouring Indonesia is known as “Kueh Lapis” but nothing beats the Sarawak version in shape, colour and taste.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

There are said to be over 60 varieties of layered cakes. Across the Sarawak river, there are rows of shops all selling the same fare. It has become a backyard industry for many local malays. One of the varieties of layered cakes in Sarawak is known as “Pua Kumpu”. It has a local “Iban” motif, similar to those found on fabrics. It has three flavours and is one of the best sellers. <\/p>\n

Malay entrepreneur Zulkanain, is one of the biggest suppliers of layered cakes in Kuching and he said business is roaring, ahead of the Sarawak state election. He said: “Election, I can say (business goes) up by 50 per cent easily. We are not too worried about extra order because we have 100-plus workers and per shift they can do about 3,000 bars.”<\/strong><\/p>\n
