As the Japanese art world stirs in response to the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, film producer Shochiku Co. said it will postpone its remake of Yasujiro Ozu\u2019s 1953 film masterpiece \u201cTokyo Story\u201d to allow veteran director Yoji Yamada to incorporate the social effects of the disaster into the script.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Shochiku announced in December that it would remake Ozu\u2019s classic under the title \u201cTokyo Family,\u201d bringing the poignant tale of an elderly couple\u2019s trip from the countryside to see their grown-up children in Tokyo into the present day.<\/p>\n

Production was due to start on the first of this month\u2013with release scheduled for December this year\u2013but the company said it will now begin shooting a new script in early 2012. \u201cWould it have been right to make this film as if the disaster never happened?\u201d asked Mr. Yamada, 79, in a statement released by Shochiku. \u201cPerhaps the March 11 disaster will change both the city of Tokyo and the Japanese peoples\u2019 way of being.\u201d \u201cI wavered over this for many days and had many discussions with the film company,\u201d the statement said. \u201cIn the end we had to make a tough decision.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
