{"id":8372,"date":"2011-04-15T00:04:36","date_gmt":"2011-04-15T00:04:36","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2011-04-15T00:04:36","modified_gmt":"2011-04-15T00:04:36","slug":"Asian-club-returns-to-University-of-Idaho-","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asiancemagazine.com\/?p=8372","title":{"rendered":"Asian club returns to University of Idaho"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Asian American and Pacific Islander Association may have disappeared<\/strong> for a few years at University of Idaho, but now it\u2019s back and in full swing.<\/p>\n<p>As part of Moms Weekend, <strong>AAPIA<\/strong> will host hypnotist Christopher Pemberton at 4:30 p.m. today in the Student Union Building ballroom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brian Vo, president of the UI chapter of AAPIA<\/strong>, said they decided to bring the hypnotist to campus to increase cultural awareness and promote their club.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe art of hypnotism actually originated in India, but mostly it\u2019s just a fun event that everyone can be interested in regardless of cultural background,\u201d Vo said.<\/p>\n<p>Pemberton has performed at UI several times before, in addition to performing at colleges and universities all across the western U.S. for more than 10 years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AAPIA only has a few members right now, so the event will also serve to recruit new ones<\/strong>. Delfino Osorio Garcia, a member of AAPIA, said the club expects to double its membership by the end of the semester.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want to be stereotyped as only doing Asian events, we want break the mold and be accessible to all people on campus,\u201d Osorio Garcia said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Crossing boundaries, both culturally and racially, is the primary mission of AAPIA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Vo said people of all cultures are welcome to join the club, not just Asians and Pacific Islanders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsia shares many cultural aspects with the rest of the world, and we really want to showcase that,\u201d Vo said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to being active on campus, AAPIA also regularly works with the Washington State University chapter and other organizations in the area, especially during the club\u2019s \u201cCulture Shock\u201d show in the fall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AAPIA is also planning a luau for next fall that will showcase the club\u2019s Pacific Islander influence.<\/strong> The luau will have traditional food, dancing and other events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis event will mix it up and show a different side to our organization,\u201d Vo
