Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger\u2019s recent separation from his wife, Maria Shriver, came after he revealed to her that he had fathered a child with a longtime household staffer, according to a person close to the family.<\/p>\n
The politician, actor and bodybuilder fathered the child more than a decade ago, before he ran for governor, and has provided financial support for the child from the beginning, this person said. Mr. Schwarzenegger said in a statement Tuesday that he revealed \u201cthis event\u201d to his wife only after leaving the governor\u2019s office earlier this year.<\/p>\n
\u201cI understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family,\u201d he said in the statement. \u201cThere are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr. Schwarzenegger continued, \u201cI ask that the media respect my wife and children through this extremely difficult time. While I deserve your attention and criticism, my family does not.\u201d<\/p>\n

The former governor, who married the high-profile Ms. Shriver in 1986, nurtured a macho image during his earlier career as a bodybuilder and actor. Allegations of womanizing surfaced in his 2003 campaign in the state\u2019s recall election for governor; the allegations claimed he had groped women during his career as a Hollywood action hero. He denied the claims, and Ms. Shriver helped blunt the allegations by standing beside him.<\/p>\n
The mother of Mr. Schwarzenegger\u2019s child worked for the family for 20 years and retired in January, according to the person close to the family.<\/p>\n
