Aspiring deejays will get the opportunity to realize their dream in MediaCorp Radio’s “So You Wanna Be A DJ” talent contest.<\/p>\n
Winners will get a juicy 6-month contract as a radio deejay with MediaCorp, along with a S$3000 cash prize.<\/p>\n
“From time to time, we have people writing to us enquiring how they could be a MediaCorp radio deejay. We are now giving them the chance,” said OLI 96.8FM Programme Director Geeta Sivasubramanian, who is in charge of the contest. <\/p>\n
“We are looking for fresh young voices.”<\/p>\n
“To help participants prep themselves, they will also to exposed to exclusive training modules, with the training undertaken by experienced radio personalities.”<\/p>\n
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Sivasubramanianin, in an e-mail interview on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Making the cut<\/p>\n
The nation-wide talent contest, a part of MediaCorp radio’s 75th anniversary celebrations, will kick off with a walk-in audition at Orchard Central on May 29 at 12pm.<\/p>\n
32 contestants (eight contestants per radio station) aged between 16 and 29 will be selected to compete for a deejay contract with each of the four participating radio stations – Y.E.S 933FM, 987FM, Oli 96.8FM and Ria 89.7FM.<\/p>\n
The eight contestants will have a chance to show off their on-air prowess in weekly hour-long radio shows on each of the four participating radio stations from June.<\/p>\n
Two contestants will be eliminated each week based on the results of listeners’ SMS voting as well the scores given by a panel of judges, until only one pair remains.<\/p>\n
The four winners of the contest \u2013 one per radio station \u2013 will be named at a finale party on July 9.<\/p>\n
Listeners will also have a chance to win up to S$1000 in cash and prizes by tuning in to the radio shows. <\/p>\n
“The contest is a celebration of the job of a deejay. It’s a brand new concept featuring a reality-based radio show,” said Sivasubramanian. <\/p>\n
“We hope that at the end of the challenges [on the radio shows], they (the contestants) will be in a better position to appreciate what a radio deejay actually does.”<\/p>\n
Applicants below 21 will require parental consent.<\/p>\n
