{"id":8919,"date":"2011-05-18T19:05:06","date_gmt":"2011-05-18T19:05:06","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2011-05-18T20:05:50","modified_gmt":"2011-05-18T20:05:50","slug":"Guy-Aoki--Marilyn-Tokuda-chair-APA-Media-Coalition-","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asiancemagazine.com\/?p=8919","title":{"rendered":"Guy Aoki &#038; Marilyn Tokuda chair APA Media Coalition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Asian Pacific American Media Coalition (APAMC)<\/strong> recently announced Guy Aoki of the Media Action Network for Asian Americans (MANAA) and <strong>Marilyn Tokuda<\/strong> of East West Players (EWP) as its new co-chairs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aoki<\/strong>, a founding member of APAMC, is the founding president of MANAA, formed in 1992 in Los Angeles. The all-volunteer, non-profit organization is the only group solely dedicated to monitoring the mass media and advocating balanced, sensitive and positive depiction and coverage of Asian Americans.<\/p>\n<p>In 2001, Aoki put comedian Sarah Silverman on the spot when he debated her on Bill Maher\u2019s \u201cPolitically Incorrect\u201d for using the slur \u201cchinks\u201d in a joke on \u201cLate Night with Conan O\u2019Brien.\u201d  Last year, <strong>Aoki coordinated the protest against the \u201cwhite-washed\u201d casting of M. Night Shyamalan\u2019s \u201cThe Last Airbender.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since 1992, <strong>Aoki has written the Rafu Shimpo column \u201cInto the Next Stage\u201d about Asian Americans and the media. <\/strong> Between 1989 and 2005, the fourth-generation Japanese American wrote syndicated pop music radio shows for Dick Clark, including the award-winning \u201cCountdown America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tokuda<\/strong>, who joined APAMC in 2002, is the arts education director at Los Angeles-based EWP, <strong>the nation\u2018s premier Asian American theater organization<\/strong> and the longest-running professional theater of color in the country. For six years, Tokuda served as the artistic director of Cold Tofu, <strong>the first Asian American comedy improvisation group<\/strong>, which she helped found.<\/p>\n<p>As an actress, she has appeared in film, on television and on stage and knows first-hand <strong>the struggles Asian Pacific Americans face<\/strong> in the entertainment industry. Her TV credits include \u201cThe Bold and the Beautiful,\u201d \u201cFrasier,\u201d \u201cJAG,\u201d \u201cSeinfeld\u201d and \u201cFriends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Both Aoki and Tokuda appeared in \u201cMr. Yunioshi: An Asian Perspective,\u201d<\/strong> a video about the character played by Mickey Rooney in \u201cBreakfast at Tiffany\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>APAMC<\/strong> was formed in 1999 after it, the <strong>NAACP<\/strong>, and Latino and Native American organizations were appalled that of the 26 new television series offered by the four major networks \u2014 ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox \u2014 none starred a person of color. To hold the networks accountable for their prime-time programming, the multi-ethnic coalition began issuing annual report cards in 2000.
