Nobel-prize winning author V.S. Naipaul claims that there is no woman writer who could serve as as his literary match. Described by some as \u201cthe greatest living writer of English pose,\u201d the Trinidad-born Mr. Naipaul, of Indian descent, sparked controversy in an interview at the Royal Geographic Society this week, saying the work of female writers, even famed and beloved author Jane Austen, is inferior. The 78-year-old said he couldn\u2019t share Austen\u2019s \u201d sentimental ambitions, her sentimental sense of the world.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mr. Naipaul believes that women writers are \u201cquite different\u201d and says he can read a paragraph and know instantly whether it was written by a woman or not. He added: \u201cAnd inevitably for a woman, she is not a complete master of a house, so that comes over in her writing too.\u201d Acclaimed for works such as his partly-autobiographical novel \u201cA House for Mr Biswas\u201d as well as his travel writing and essays, Naipaul also commented on the work of his female publisher. \u201cMy publisher, who was so good as a taster and editor, when she became a writer, lo and behold it was all this feminine tosh. I don\u2019t mean this in any unkind way,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Naipaul is no stranger to controversy or criticism, having famously fallen out with American travel writer Paul Theroux. The pair purportedly ended their 15-year feud at the Hay Festival in Wales this week. Naipaul\u2019s comments are the latest to propel a literary feud that\u2019s broken out among writers about the status and quality of women writers.<\/strong><\/p>\n
