Remember this psycho<\/a>? Tatsuya Ichihashi<\/strong> admitted to raping and strangling a young British woman, but the man who attempted cosmetic surgery on his own face to evade a nationwide manhunt said he never meant to kill the 22-year-old.<\/p>\n

Ichihashi has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of British teacher Lindsay Hawker in Tokyo in 2007.<\/strong> The case became one of Japan’s highest-profile murders<\/strong> after Hawker’s body was found in a dirt-filled bathtub on the balcony of Ichihashi’s apartment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The autopsy showed she died of suffocation, and prosecutors believe Ichihashi strangled her after the rape.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ichihashi testified that after raping her, he bound her and spoke with her for hours, seeking forgiveness.<\/strong> He says she choked to death when he covered her mouth to stop her from screaming for help but that he did not mean to kill her. <\/p>\n

After the killing, Ichihashi<\/strong> went on the run for two and a half years, working in temporary jobs between Aomori in Japan’s north and Okinawa island in the far south.<\/p>\n

He used the money from odd jobs to pay for cosmetic surgery, altering his eyelids and nose and having a facial mole removed in an effort to evade police. <\/p>\n
