{"id":9757,"date":"2011-07-24T23:07:42","date_gmt":"2011-07-24T23:07:42","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2011-07-24T23:07:42","modified_gmt":"2011-07-24T23:07:42","slug":"Vietnam-names-new-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asiancemagazine.com\/?p=9757","title":{"rendered":"Vietnam names new president"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Vietnam named a long-time rival of Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung as its new president.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Truong Tan Sang, 62<\/strong>, was confirmed for the job by a vote of the one-party National Assembly, after he was formally nominated as the sole candidate over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;He has been voted president,&#8221; with more than 97 percent of 496 votes, said an official from the Assembly&#8217;s press center, asking not to be named.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sang, the country&#8217;s ninth president<\/strong>, will take on a post first held by revered founding father Ho Chi Minh.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sang had been the ruling Communist Party&#8217;s de facto number two since 2006 and mounted an aggressive challenge for the prime minister&#8217;s job<\/strong> before the party&#8217;s January congress, which determined top leadership posts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Those positions are being confirmed this week, and Dung is expected to be elected to another term as prime minister in a National Assembly vote tomorrow<\/strong>, cementing his place as the country&#8217;s most powerful politician.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Despite their rivalry, the relationship between Dung and Sang is expected to be cordial as the prime minister focuses on trying to bring stability to a troubled economy<\/strong>, said an Asian diplomat.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s not about to pick a fight with his rival,&#8221; said the diplomat, requesting anonymity.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the Assembly after his election, <strong>Sang said the country faced &#8220;huge opportunities and challenges&#8221; on its path to development.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I believe that under the leadership of the Party the Vietnamese people&#8230; will overcome all challenges, successfully building a rich, civilized country and successfully protecting the socialist regime,&#8221; he was quoted as saying by the Dan Tri online newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>Like Dung, Sang is a native of southern Vietnam. <strong>A student militant imprisoned by the then US-backed South Vietnam regime, Sang later became mayor of Ho Chi Minh City<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Sang replaces Nguyen Minh Triet, who served one term.<\/p>\n<p><em>Source AFP<\/em><br \/>\n<!--break--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vietnam named a long-time rival of Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung as its new president.
